After installation, the pool is filled with water to tension the material.

We see many leaking swimming pools with cracked structures. The causes for the cracks are usually poor construction or the ground being unstable.

We initially started using reinforced liners nearly 20 years ago as a solution for leaking swimming pool structures. Once the pool structure has cracked, the forces involved are enormous, then add to this the pressure of the water and you start to realise that filling a crack with something, or stapling the concrete will never be as strong as the original. If the original structure failed, then a patch will fail. Making these kind of patch repairs resulted in an unhappy client and an unhappy contractor.

We started using the Renolit AlkorPlan system, as no matter what method used to repair cracks, many of them failed a few months after or a couple of years after. Clients had tried sika repair mortar, silicone, carbon fibre staples, steel staples, flexible cements etc. We needed something guaranteed.

The Renolit AlkorPlan liner is guaranteed* waterproof for 10 years. It is a triple layer PVC laminate, reinforced with a polyester mesh. It remains a permanently flexible decorative waterproof skin inside the pool structure. It is a solution often recommended by architects.

In this case the pool is built on a raised plot, with a retaining wall, with trees around. Some of the trees were removed during renovation work. In all probability, once the roots shrunk, the ground became unstable.

We have installed Renolit TOUCH Authentic in this unusually shaped swimming pool, for a stunning look. The installation took our 3 man team approximately 18 hours.

How to choose the correct colour swimming pool liner

Your swimming pool is undoubtedly the centre piece of your garden or terrace and as such you need to be sure that you are choosing the correct type and colour of finish.

Persia Blue will always be the most popular in Southern Spain and Southern Portugal. It’s bright blue finish perfectly compliments the Mediterranean home.

There are many other colours than Persia Blue, so we have tried to put together an article that introduces you to the variety available. When we show samples its difficult to imagine how they will look in your pool. No matter what colour the chosen finish is, the pool water will always be a blue or turquoise colour. It is much like looking out to sea, the colour of the water changes, depending on the colour of sand or rock below and the depth of the water, but it is always a shade of blue or turquoise. Your swimming pool follows the same principals.

What sort of home is it? Modern, traditional? What is the condition of the pool build? Modern homes tend to lend themselves better to bold choices, such as greys, white etc, where the clean lines of the build are reflected by the swimming pool. If the home is more traditional, then a finish such as Persia Blue, Persia Sand or CERAMICS Atenea is more suitable.

When choosing the finish, it is also important to consider how well the pool has been built. If the interior of the pool is not straight or even, then we don’t recommend a solid colour. An AlkorPlan 3000, CERAMICS or TOUCH is more suited.

The next up is Renolit CERAMICS. This is a slightly thicker liner, as it has the pattern of mosaic tiles stamped into it, so has the feel and look of mosaic tiles, with none of the disadvantages. It is non slip so can be used in shallow pools or on the treads of steps.

How to change a swimming pool liner and give your pool an amazing new look. Changing a swimming pool liner is a fairly quick process. In this case, the owners of the house wanted to change the liner for something that fit more with the style of the villa. The villa has been modernised and the traditional blue mosaic look didn’t fit with the new style.

We have installed Renolit TOUCH ELEGANCE. This luxurious finish looks like natural stone and gives the water a deep blue colour.

How to change the pool liner.

Preperation-

First step, remove the existing liner, take to an authorised waste disposal centre
Check the integrity of the existing fittings, such as the skimmers, lights, drains, jets. If any show signs of damage, then this needs to be repaired.
Check the condition of the rubber gaskets. Check condition of the plates, as these can crack from overtightening of the screws. If any are damaged, then they will need replacing (if available, some are obsolete now).
Thoroughly clean the inside of the swimming pool
Install the top profile AlkorMetal, using polyurethane adhesive, wall plugs and nails, or rivets.

Now the pool is ready, the chosen colour of liner can be installed. The liner is welded to the AlkorMetal profile at the top. In the corners of the pools and on tricky areas like steps it is held in place with contact adhesive. At the bottom, the liner is riveted to the floor, leaving a gap between the liner and the wall. Then the floor section is welded in on top.

Once all the sections have been welded together, the joins are finished with liquid pvc, this smooths the joins and leaves it looking neat.

The face plates and gaskets are reinstalled and the liner cut away from around them, the covers installed. The lights reinstalled.

The pool can be filled almost immediately and enjoyed for many years to come.

Renolit AlkorPlan TOUCH range of reinforced pool membranes are designed to give a luxurious natural stone look and feel. The texture of the membrane is because of its thickness and the the 3D effect.

This swimming pool in Gaucin, was cracked and leaking. The owners needed a permanent solution, but also wanted a unique pool. The RENOLIT range of reinforced pool membranes is perfect for this, as the membrane is both the waterproofing and the cosmetic finish.

The project took around 5 days, a day to prepare the walls, as there were some very uneven parts, then another day to install the new skimmers, drain, jets and lights, then 3 days to install the membrane.

The cracks in the pool structure need no other treatment than to make them smooth. In the photos you can see the water coming back into the pool through the cracks.

If you have a cracked swimming pool that looses water, try to repair it sooner than later. The longer it is left, the worse the problem becomes. As the water leaks out, it can start to wash out the earth under the pool, making the problem worse. The leaking water can also corrode the steel in the structure, making the problem worse.
