Torremolinos swimming pool refurbishment. Leak repair & renovation of a 60 year old cracked pool.

This swimming pool was built in 1959. The house was purchased by the current owners parents in 1979, after they moved to the Costa del Sol for work.

The pool had been leaking progressively worse over the last 15 years. Some remedial work was done to repair cracks inside the pool, typical repairs to the plumbing were made and pipes were changed outside the pool.

Once we started work, we discovered that the sections of pipe in the walls of the pool were still iron pipes, as the original build predates PVC plumbing. The extent of the cracks was worse than first realised, with cracks in all the walls.

It was necessary to fill the channel at the top of the pool wall, install new sections of pipe to replace the iron and install a skimmer.

Here we installed RENOLIT ALKORPLAN TOUCH PRESTIGE.

This installation took 3.5 days, it was complicated by the need to install some new plumbing, skimmer and fill the channel at the top of the wall.

Our pool installations are fast, but there are only so many working weeks in a year, then there can be delays caused by bad weather, transport strikes, pandemics etc, to avoid disappointment and stress, schedule the work for when you are NOT using the pool. Don’t leave it until 2 weeks before the guests arrive!!

An old swimming pool, cracked through the structure due to ground movement combined with poor construction.

The pool had never had any renovation work done to it, since it was built, so the decision was taken to install a reinforced swimming pool liner, to both waterproof the pool and provide a new cosmetic finish.

As you can see, the transformation is impressive.

This pool refurbishment took just 14 hours, with very little mess and the pool can be refilled immediately.

This is the Renolit AlkorPlan 3000 Persia Blue. It is a reinforced PVC laminate that acts as both the cosmetic finish and the waterproofing of the pool. It is the perfect solution for leaking swimming pools, or refurbishment of existing pools. It can be applied to pools of all shapes and sizes.

If your pool requires renovation work, the best time to plan it is over the Autumn and winter months when you are not using the pool. Although our installations are quick and mess free, we have to work around inclement weather etc, so by the time it gets to spring we can have a lengthy queue.

This pool in Los Alamos, Torremolinos, Malaga was cracked and leaking into the basement.

In keeping with the modern feel of the villa, we used the new Renolit Ceramics ETNA liner, which is a mid grey colour, but still gives the water a stunning blue colour. For accents and the steps, we used dark grey and almost black stone effect liners.

This stunning villa in Los Alamos, Torremolinos, Malaga, was built around 12 years ago, the pool forms part of the construction of the house.

It is unique in the fact that the swimming pool goes under the house and uses a combination of colours to give contrast between the different zones of the pool.

The swimming pool suffered from structural cracking in the walls. The cracks had been “repaired” several times. Non of these repairs to the cracks were successful and the swimming pool continued to leak. In addition, the repairs looked awful, because the tiles were different. This is a problem we see many times, crack repairs that just don’t work and are repeated year after year, costing wasted time and money. The water from the pool was leaking into the apartment under the house, causing problems.

The solution for this leaking swimming pool is clear. Install a Renolit AlkorPlan liner. Guaranteed to be waterproof. The reinforcing in the liner ensures that the movement in the pool structure will not cause problems-

The finish chosen was a combination of grey colours. The main colour is the stunning new Renolit AlkorPlan Ceramics ETNA. For the back wall of the pool, we used Renolit TOUCH Elegance, which is a very dark grey, almost black. The pillars and treads on the steps are also Renolit TOUCH, but the from the Elegance range. The Renolit TOUCH range emulates natural stone, with 3D texture. The Ceramics liner also has a 3D pattern and from a few centimetres away, it is indistinguishable from tiles.

As you can see from the photos of this pool, even though the finish is grey, the pool is a beautiful turquoise colour when full of water.

Ceramics and Touch liners are just over 2mm thick.

In this pool, the lights, jets, skimmers and drain all have to be adapted to be compatible with the installation of the reinforced pool liner. Where the liner meets these fittings, it is attached with stainless screws and gaskets to ensure that the pool is waterproof. The new lights are par56 white LED to reduce running costs.

A steel pool is a type of prefabricated swimming pool system, that creates the walls from steel panels that are bolted together. The base of the pool is made from a weak sand cement mix. This is then lined with a very thin factory produced bag liner, which does not have the durability of a reinforced AlkorPlan liner.

Our Swedish clients recently purchased this house in Torremolinos, near to the port in Benalmadena. The house and swimming pool are in need of renovation, having little maintenance in the last 20 years.

The swimming pool is in poor condition and has a couple of leaks. There was one leak due to a broken skimmer bucket. The second leak in the swimming pool was from a crack in the prefabricated steps. As part of our pool lining process, we normally line the steps to prevent leaks due to the steps breaking and there can be leaks in the seal between the steps and the liner (as this is a part unique to the original pool and has to be reused). Lining the steps also gives the pool a really fresh modern look.

The liner used in this pool is the beautiful Persia Sand from the Renolit AlkorPlan 3000 range and for the tread on the steps we have used membrane from the Touch range, which emulates natural stone and is non slip. This fits in very well with the sand coloured surround.

In addition, we installed new filtration equipment in the far side of the garden, away from the terrace. The original filtration equipment was taking a lot of space up on the patio next to the pool, moving it increases patio space and also reduces the noise next to the pool area. The difficulty with this is sourcing the same tiles if the pool and terrace are quite old.

An AstralPool par 56 LED bulb was fitted, which reduces the electrical consumption from 300w to 24w. These bulbs also last much longer than standard halogen bulbs.
