Total renovation of a very tired pool, Using Renolit AlkorPlan

This was a renovation for a very special client, my parents!

The pool was renovated by my father in the year 2000, after they bought the house. My father tiled the pool, installed the surround and did some work to the terrace, it looked very nice when first done. After 20 years, it was time for some renovation.

The pool was in a very bad condition, as it was leaking. The skimmer bucket had broken, the pool had cracked across its width and tiles were starting to come off. He was having problem keeping the pool clean, as it was leaking and was being constantly filled from a well.

Originally the pool was built in the 1960’s. It was built before the house, the original owner used the finca for weekends, growing vegetables and having family gatherings. The original part of the house was built in the 70’s. The next owner tiled the pool, extended the house, finally my parents bought it in the late 90’s and put their touch on things.

One of the things that we did here, that is a little unconventional was to change the position of the skimmers to the shallow end. There was only one skimmer and 2 jets, but the jets pumped in the opposite direction to the prevailing wind, rendering the skimmer useless, as the leaves never made it to the skimmer. By changing the skimmers to the opposite end, adding a second, we should be able to make the filtration much more effective.

There were a few loose coping stones, which we re-fixed.

The lights were removed, as the pool is no longer used at night.

The next big change was the choice of colour, here Persia Sand was chosen with TOUCH Sublime for the steps.

As you can see, the transformation of this swimming pool is pretty amazing. The renovation was well worthwhile, giving my parents a trouble free pool for many years to come.

The pool had never had any renovation work done to it, since it was built, so the decision was taken to install a reinforced swimming pool liner, to both waterproof the pool and provide a new cosmetic finish.

This pool is beautiful, nestled in the mountains between Malaga and Antequera. Unfortunately, it didn’t look like this when we arrived. The pool was in desperate need of repairs. The pool was leaking badly. Some repairs had been carried out, changing pipes for the skimmers and jets, but the problem here was structural.

The swimming pool had been built in a way that takes advantage of the natural form of the land. This gives a stunning look, but also means that the pool is stressed by the way that the ground wants to move. The area of the steps is probably on the most stable part of the ground, as in this area there is bedrock present. The deep end of the pool is where the ground is falling away. We suspect that these stresses are the reason for the pool leaking, as there is cracking in the shallow end of the pool.

The first part of the installation is to replace all of the fittings in the pool with liner compatible ones. This includes the skimmers, jets, drains etc. Once these are in place, we can install the top profile. The reinforced liner is then heat welded into place.

The reinforced pool liner from Renolit is both the waterproofing and cosmetic finish of the pool. It is the perfect solution for a cracked or leaking pool.

This project took 4 days, due to the size and shape of the pool. A swimming pool poorly built and never finished needed a guaranteed solution to give the owners the peace of mind they deserve.

The pool was badly constructed and had many vertical cracks. An attempt had been made to waterproof the pool with a cement render, but this does not cure the cracks. On investigation, it was found that the concrete pool walls had lots of steel in them, but only running vertically! No horizontal steel reinforcing.

We changed all the fittings to be liner compatible and then installed the brand new Renolit TOUCH ORIGIN liner. A stunning granite type finish.

This interesting little pool was built in the garden of a small holiday home in Benalmadena. The design makes the best use of the space and shape of the garden, leaving plenty of space for tables and chairs.

Although the design of the pool is good, the build is terrible.

The swimming pool was built above ground on the heavily sloping plot, the terrace around the pool is supported by beams and hollow underneath, allowing us access to the pool walls. It was built from breeze blocks, then waterproofed. The structure is just not strong enough to support the weight of the water. If a wall of a house gets a hairline crack, it is unsightly, but doesn’t affect anything, but if a swimming pool gets a hairline crack, the water leaks out of it.

This leaves the client disappointed, having paid for work that hasn’t met expectations, putting up with the neighbours complaining about damp from the leaking swimming pool and facing having to pay to rectify the problem.

The only rectification that could be done in this case was to install a Renolit AlkorPlan reinforced pool liner. This membrane is both the cosmetic finish and the waterproofing. It is guaranteed not to leak. Solutions using tiles, waterproof renders etc would not have been successful, as the structure is not strong enough, so these renders would flex too much, leaking again.

The installation here took around 11 hours. We rectified some other issues, such as the light being far too high on the wall of the pool. The client chose to eliminate the drain in the pool, as it is not needed for filtration (liner pools only use skimmers for filtration) and the pool looks better without it. The tile will be replaced above the skimmer, when the replacements arrive.

The colour is Renolit AlkorPlan 3000 Persia Blue, with matching non slip Persia Blue non slip treads.

After not being used for several years, this swimming pool needed a total renovation. The tiles were all falling off the pool, the structure was cracked and had tipped slightly and generally, looked disastrous.

These types of project don’t scare us though! In this case, the owner has prepared the pool ready for the installation. He removed the tiles (normally this doesn’t need doing, but in this case they were not well stuck), he rendered the cracked areas to be smooth and installed new prefabricated capping stones to level the pool.

Our first job is to install the correct fittings for the Renolit AlkorPlan reinforced pool liner. These are special fittings with rubber gaskets and stainless steel screws. The top profile goes up and the pool is ready.

Although installations are fast, there can be unexpected delays, such as rain, sickness, so leaving installations to the last minute can cause problems.

Painted swimming pool renovation and refurbishment

Old swimming pools that were originally painted, like this one in La Linea, Cadiz, require maintenance every year or so. The pool has to be drained and repainted nearly every season. The repeated painting of the pool results in the surfaces starting to flake. In this case the swimming pool filter was blocked with paint flakes and the sand had to be changed.

This continuos maintenance to keep the pool looking nice is costly in terms of the amount of water used and costly because of the labour needed every time to repaint.

To renovate or reform a painted swimming pool, there are really only 2 options.

Pool Tiling

The first is tiling. In order to tile with glass mosaic tiles, the pool must be sandblasted in order to remove all the old paint. This creates a huge amount of mess and other problems.

Once the paint has been sand blasted, the render below can be damaged, requiring remedial work to repair. The other problem that is often overlooked (and often missed to cut costs), is that the paint was actually sealing the structure, it is imperative that the structure is treated with a waterproofing layer before tiling, or it will most likely leak.

Painted pools were often built cheaply in the first place or were originally water deposits (hence the choice of paint as the finish). When a pool was built in an economic way, probably not using reinforced concrete, it is impossible to tell how well it was built, so it is difficult to know if it will have structural problems in the future.

All of these processes are costly and messy, probably taking a couple of weeks start to finish.

Renolit AlkorPlan liners are specifically made for swimming pools, which is what sets them apart from other solutions.

Other solutions to structural pool leaks include polyester and polyurea. Polyester or fibreglass (FRP or GRP) is a composite of chopped fiber glass matt bound with a polyester resin and finished with gelcoat. This has limitations and we have had to line pools that have been fibre glassed. There are 3 main problems that manifest.

The fibreglass is not very flexible. It can not cope with cracks very well.
The fibreglass de-laminates from the substrate. If moisture gets behind, the fiber glass comes away from the surface below.
Degrading of the gelcoat. Due to the resin being hand mixed, it is impossible for each small batch of resin to be equal, so they fade at different rates leaving the pool looking patchy. You may find that the pool water ends up looking milky, this is because of the gelcoat breaking down. The gelcoat sets very rapidly, so in our hot climate a contractor may use less hardener to slow the setting time, however gelcoat will never full cure if the correct ratio of hardener to gelcoat is not used.
Application. The weather has to be perfect. No humidity or the resin will not stick properly, no wind as debris will stick to the gelcoat and not hot or it will set too fast to work with.

In addition, the finish of fibreglass is not particularly smooth, finish is like a painted pool.

Polyurea is a good solution, but needs maintenance. The top coat needs to be reapplied every couple of years. It is costly and also leaves the pool looking like a low budget painted pool.
