This swimming pool displays a typical problem created by builders when doing renovations. During the modernisation and renovation of the villa, a new large terrace was required around the swimming pool. For the builder, the easiest way to support the terrace is to put the new concrete slab on top of the pool wall, then raise the skimmers and tile the pool.

This swimming pool in Monte Biarritz was in a terrible condition and did not hold water. The pool was cracked in several places and leaking. This was due to the very poor quality of concrete in the original build.

The pool was leaking so badly that for the previous summer, it was not allowed to be opened.

This is a pool that we first provided a quote for 4 years ago, at that time it had been leaking for years previously. It can take communities several years to make decisions. In this case, over the winter, builders looked at the pool and advised that the community again contact us for the installation of a liner. The new owners of this beautiful country house in Rio Gordo, Malaga, wanted to put their personal touch on the home and the swimming pool.

This swimming pool originally had a liner fitted in 2001, as the painted pool structure had cracked and was leaking, so there was really no choice other than to install a reinforced liner. The original liner was not leaking, but the pool was.

As part of the installation here, we removed the old liner, checked the integrity of all the fittings inside the pool. We found that the light niche was broken, so this had to be replaced and the opportunity was taken to upgrade it to an LED light. The broken light niche was the source of the swimming pool leak.

Steps were built in the corner of the pool to make getting in and out of the pool easier and also give some seating in the swimming pool, where the view could be admired.

The installation of a Renolit AlkorPlan reinforced liner is the most sensible and most economical way of repairing a leaking pool structure. Once the structure of a pool has failed and there are cracks in it, the options for repair are quite limited and the results not always certain.

Approaches to swimming pool crack repair differ, but there are really only 2 methods, but they are rarely successful, one method is to staple the cracks with either steel or carbonfibre staples which are designed to hold the concrete together. The second method is to inject the crack with epoxy resin. These are supposed to be able to hold the concrete together, but with the forces involved and the way the ground moves, they rarely, if ever work for more than a few months.

For the repair of this pool, the best solution was to install the Renolit AlkorPlan reinforced swimming pool membrane. The membrane remains permanently flexible and with its reinforcement, will not rip or tear.

The installation takes a team around 20 hours. The first step is to change the fittings in the pool to be compatible with the Renolit liner system. After this, the top profile is put into place, then the welding of the liner can begin. The sheets of material are welded together with hot air.

When a swimming pool has tipped, it can be tricky to repair. By tipped, we refer to a pool that has subsided and dropped at one end or in one corner. This is usually because the ground was poorly prepared. The weight of the pool sinks at its heaviest point, normally the deep end. The swimming pool can also crack when this happens.

There is only really one way of solving this problem. Once the pool has sunk, if it doesn’t move any more after a year or so, it is unlikely to move more. The surround of the pool is removed, if skimmers are too low, they can be moved to the correct position and made level. The walls are built up to be level and then a new pool surround installed and the terrace repaired. The inside of the pool is then refinished.

The problem with repairing the pool like this is that it can be susceptible to leaks after from a few places. One is the plumbing, as this may have been stressed when the pool moved. The second place is through the light conduits. These come up above the water line, but if they have dropped with the swimming pool structure, they will leak after as they are below the new waterline.

The most important area where the pool can leak is in the joint where the walls have been built up, as there are 2 different structures moving at different rates.

Installation of a Renolit AlkorPlan reinforced membrane is the most sensible and economic solution. No worries of the swimming pool structure leaking. Retiling the whole swimming pool and trusting that the repair where the wall has been built up is not an issue. Renolit AlkorPlan liners are guaranteed leak free. The lights in a liner pool are sealed differently, so will not leak. Repairing a swimming pool with subsidence, using the Renolit AlkorPlan reinforced pool liner is more economical, as a local builder with no specialist knowledge can make the pool level, ready for the installation of the liner. Using a traditional method, new concrete would have to be poured and bonded to the old structure, then the pool waterproofed and tiled, still leaving the risk that the joint could fail.

In this case, the homeowner did all of the remedial work himself, levelling the pool and replacing the surround. We installed the new fittings and the liner.

How to fit lights to an existing swimming pool

Many swimming pools have been built without lights. We are often asked if we can fit lights to a pool whilst we are carrying out the renovation work.

Anything is possible, but retrofitting pool lights is extremely expensive. The biggest challenge is getting the cables to the lights. In most cases, the pool surround would need to be removed, then channels cut across the terrace for the cables. The cables then need to get to an electrical control box where the transformer and switches are housed.

In some rare cases, the pool room is on the other side of the pool wall, so there is access for the cables to pass to an electricity supply without needing to touch the pool surround or terrace.

We have a solution to avoid digging up your patio. We can supply and install solar pool lights. Or you can purchase the lights for DIY installation.

These lights are self contained units that install without cables, no drilling, digging, or cutting channels. They can even be installed with water in the pool! The lights can be used for any type of pool.

THE LIGHTS CAN BE INSTALLED WITHOUT EMPTYING THE POOL!

For steel panel pools with liner, we have a model that attaches to the pool walls with magnets. It is placed on top of the pool liner and is firmly held in place with powerful magnets, no glue required.

For all other types of pool (liner, fibreglass, painted, tiled) the lights are fixed in place with a polymer adhesive. This adhesive is specially designed to be used underwater, draining the pool is not necessary (our video shows being installed empty, as we were installing a new pool liner at the time). This is applied in a way that the lights are easily removable when they reach the end of their life. The life of the lights is approximatly 7 years.

With a diameter of 308 mm, a thickness of only 12 mm and a weight of 1.2 kg, each unit can illuminate an area of 160 to 215 ft² (15 to 20 m²).

Our lights have a sensor that detects if it is day or night to start working.

The internal battery is lithium, so has a long working life.

How to choose the correct colour swimming pool liner

Your swimming pool is undoubtedly the centre piece of your garden or terrace and as such you need to be sure that you are choosing the correct type and colour of finish.

Persia Blue will always be the most popular in Southern Spain and Southern Portugal. It’s bright blue finish perfectly compliments the Mediterranean home.

There are many other colours than Persia Blue, so we have tried to put together an article that introduces you to the variety available. When we show samples its difficult to imagine how they will look in your pool. No matter what colour the chosen finish is, the pool water will always be a blue or turquoise colour. It is much like looking out to sea, the colour of the water changes, depending on the colour of sand or rock below and the depth of the water, but it is always a shade of blue or turquoise. Your swimming pool follows the same principals.

What sort of home is it? Modern, traditional? What is the condition of the pool build? Modern homes tend to lend themselves better to bold choices, such as greys, white etc, where the clean lines of the build are reflected by the swimming pool. If the home is more traditional, then a finish such as Persia Blue, Persia Sand or CERAMICS Atenea is more suitable.

When choosing the finish, it is also important to consider how well the pool has been built. If the interior of the pool is not straight or even, then we don’t recommend a solid colour. An AlkorPlan 3000, CERAMICS or TOUCH is more suited.

How to change a liner in an inground steel panel pool. If you have a steel panelled swimming pool, the chances are that it still has its original bag liner. The bag or kit liners are a very thin one piece liner and have a fairly short lifespan.

So how to renovate your inground swimming pool?

The Renolit AlkorPlan 2000 and 3000 ranges of liners are more than double the thickness of the original liner and are reinforced with polyester mesh. The liners are so thick that they are made onsite. The rolls of material are 1m60cm wide. The material is fused together with hot air welding.

The first step is to cut away the old liner and dispose of. Once the old liner is removed, the walls can be checked to make sure that there are no significant issues. The fittings are dismantled and checked for damage. In rare cases they can have been damaged during the original installation through overtightening of the screws.

The top profile is riveted in place. Then the wall sections are installed. If there are prefabricated steps in the pool, we cover these as well, as they are prone to cracking and leaks around the seals.

Then the floor sections are welded to the wall sections. Once all the Renolit AlkorPlan membrane is welded into place, the seams are sealed with liquid PVC. The joint under the coping stones is sealed with polyurethane. The accessories are reinstalled, the skimmers, lights, drain, jets etc. That’s it! The pool is ready to be filled, no drying time, no waiting.

Here we used Marble from the Renolit AlkorPlan 3000 range, with contrasting non-slip material for the steps.

Although our installations are quick, you need to plan your liner change or pool project well in advance.
