Using the Renolit TOUCH Authentic Swimming Pool Laminate to transform a pool

The owners of this pool wanted something special, so chose the Renolit TOUCH Authentic to give their pool the wow factor.

The swimming pool leaked through the structure, but the owners had had so many problems we also changed all the pipes. The pipe work was not in good condition.

This renovation took 3 days.

This swimming pool was leaking through structural damage and cracks in the rear wall of the pool, where it meets the concrete foundation of the villa, adjacent to the basement.

Pool leaks like this can end up making basements damp, or even in extreme cases causing structural damage to the house, so they need to be addressed quickly.

In a popular Andalucia forum, we saw some horrifying advice from homeowner to homeowner regarding swimming pool leaks. The type of advise that ends up wasting clients money and causing jobs to be done twice. These points are particularly pertinent here, as our client was wrongly advised the same things.

Many people falsely believe that the tiles in a swimming pool provide the waterproofing. They do not. If the pool is properly built, the structure itself is waterproof, (using gunite or reinforced vibrated concrete), or the structure is treated using a waterproof render. The tiles are then a cosmetic finish. The grout between the tiles is cement based and is not waterproof.

Other contractors suggested to the client that regrouting the pool would solve their problems, but they had done their research and knew that this was not the solution, despite posts on forums advising it.

Regrouting a pool does not stop it leaking. There are specialist epoxy grouts that will help with the waterproofing (as mentioned in the popular Andalucia forum), but will only work if the pool is structurally sound and it is not a permanent solution. This is for 2 reasons.

A cracked pool structure has failed, it has been weakened and will always move slightly at the point of the crack. Epoxy grout is not flexible and will fail at the same point, as the structure moves slightly. This movement can be because the ground is moving, heat and cold, or wet and dry (rain then sun).
The second problem is that the tiling in an existing pool has been subjected to years of chemicals, acids, chlorine and the adhesives or cements start to break down (which is one of the reasons that pools need to be regrouted). This means that applying the epoxy grout, is only patching a surface that is not completely solid. The tiles may move, then the fine skin is broken and the process starts again and the whole pool has to be treated again.
The other problem with epoxy grout is that it is very difficult and slow to work with, so the job could take weeks.

Another false belief that we hear, is that a fine crack in a pool wall can’t leak. In the same popular Andalucian forum, a home owner was wrongly advised that a 2mm crack in the pool was nothing to worry about!! If you beer was in a glass with a 2mm crack, it would all leak out, the same as the water in the pool.

Poor advise on the repair of a structural swimming pool leak causes unnecessary costs. There is the cost of the work, cost of water, inconvenience, then when this hasn’t worked, the process has to be repeated again. We find it particularity annoying when a client has previously been given bad advise.

This was a complete cosmetic renovation of a private swimming pool in Tomar, Portugal. Tomar is a beautiful city inland from Lisbon and Porto in the district of Santarem.

The swimming pool was in poor condition, suffering from a leak around the skimmer mouth. We repaired the skimmer mouth and then installed the beautiful Renolit AlkorPlan 3000 Persia Blue reinforced liner. The pool looked fantastic, but the clients were not satisfied there, they chose to install the stunning borders from Border Choice. The Border Choice borders are great self adhesive swimming pool borders, easily fitted by the client.

If you are considering a pool renovation, please do not leave it until 2 weeks before you want to use the pool. Although renovations using Renolit Alkorplan are quick, they still need to be planned. The best for the client is to start planning in September, then the work can be done around family visits, bad weather and other considerations.

Tolox is a small village near to Alozaina, Coin, Guaro and Monda. It is situated on the road from Coin to Ronda.

This pool had suffered structural cracking due to the poor construction initially and the ground moving. Part of the pool and had been built on an excavated area and part built on spoil.

The pool cracked both sides “breaking its back”. This caused huge water leaks. The previous owners of the house had attempted to repair the cracks, but this was not successful, as you can see from the photos, it also looked awful.

One of the other problems caused by the ground moving was that it broke the pipes from one of the skimmers and the hoover socket. In order to leave the pool as trouble free as possible, we have removed these. They were not really needed and were 2 points that the pool could leak from, as the ground at that side of the pool is moving.

Another pipe we had to repair was the pipe for the main drain. The pipe was not leaking but had been chlorine damaged. This is not common in drain pipes of swimming pools, but in this case it was because the pool had to be over-chlorinated as it was leaking and then the pool could only circulate the water using the drain, as one of the skimmer pipes was leaking. The chlorine damage had caused the pipe to become very brittle.

The pool has been lined and waterproofed using Renolit AlkorPlan 3000 Persia Blue. This will guarantee that the structure is leak free.

This pool also benefits from the installation of a salt chlorination system, to give softer, sparkling water and lower maintenance. The salt water is kinder on the skin in comparison to regular chlorine.

Local pool companies had diagnosed the leaks from the cracks in the structure, but their solution was to build a new pool inside the existing structure. The clients wanted another approach with guaranteed results, so they contacted us.

Building a new pool inside an existing structure is a perfectly acceptable method, but has several disadvantages in comparison to the installation of a liner.

Cost. Construction of a new pool inside the other is approximately 3 times the cost of a reinforced swimming pool membrane.
Time. We can install in approximately 2 days for a pool this size, compared to around 3 weeks for construction.
Mess. In 2 days, we can’t really make that much mess. The only noisy or messy part is when we change the fittings to be liner compatible. This normally takes about 4 hours.
Pool size. A new pool will be between 400-450mm smaller in both length and width and 200mm shallower than the original, due to the amount of concrete needed.
The liner is guaranteed by a multinational company. Who guarantees the new pool structure?

Other advantages of the swimming pool liner are that it is easier to care for than traditional pool surfaces. It is nicer to walk on, with no sharp edges compared to glass mosaic tiles.

The reinforced Renolit pool liner is reinforced with polyester fibres, remaining permanently flexible. Technical specifications state that it will tolerate 3% stretch per metre. That means a crack can open 3cm in a 1m section before causing a problem. This is a crack big enough to put your hand through!

This kit liner started to fail, allowing the salt water from the swimming pool to come into contact with the steel panels of the pool.

This created a lot of corrosion, meaning that a welding team had to be called in to repair the panels, making them strong enough to be able to install the new liner.

The panels were then sanded and coated with rustproofing.

The new replacement pool liner installed in this swimming pool, is the versatile Persia Sand, from the Renolit AlkorPlan 3000 range. For the steps, we used Renolit AlkorPlan Touch. The steps were covered with the liner material as well, as this eliminates the risk of a leak between the pool liner and the prefabricated fibreglass steps.

The new reinforced liner will give many years of service, as it’s lacquered finish makes it far superior to the original.

New LED par 56 bulbs were also installed, further reducing the amount of maintenance that the pool will need in the future. This is a sensible upgrade, especially if the light fittings are new. Par56 light fittings tend to leak if they have been taken apart to replace the bulbs, which then further reduces the life of the replacement bulbs. Not to mention that they are a bit of a pain to actually work on! Having to reach down into the pool water to undo the screws can be quite unpleasant in winter.

This community pool was built 8 years ago, but leaked from the start. The list of problems the pool had is quite extensive.

The pool is cracked in at least 4 places on the walls. Each of these cracks were a substantial pool leak. In some places, the cracks ran through the light buckets, as can be seen in the photos. Several attempts at repair were made by the constructor, but none of these repairs were successful, as the concrete is just not strong enough.

There is also a crack running up the centre of the pool, this is due the the 110mm drain pipe running through the middle of the pool, weakening the structure at a critical point. Normally the drain pipe would exit to one side of the pool or to the closest wall.

The installation of the Renolit AlkorPlan reinforced liner will ensure that the pool structure will not leak any more. It took a total of 6 days to finish the installation, a pool this size would normally be faster, but the columns separating the deep end and shallow end added an extra complication.

Renolit AlkorPlan reinforced pool liners guarantee waterproofing, as the liner is 3 layers of material, 2 waterproofing layers with polyester mesh bonded in between. For added durability, the liner is coated in lacquer to protect it from chemicals.

The shallow end of the pool has had the floor completely covered with non slip material as it is so shallow.
