How to change a swimming pool liner and give your pool an amazing new look. Changing a swimming pool liner is a fairly quick process. In this case, the owners of the house wanted to change the liner for something that fit more with the style of the villa. The villa has been modernised and the traditional blue mosaic look didn’t fit with the new style.

How to change the pool liner.

Preperation-

First step, remove the existing liner, take to an authorised waste disposal centre
Check the integrity of the existing fittings, such as the skimmers, lights, drains, jets. If any show signs of damage, then this needs to be repaired.
Check the condition of the rubber gaskets. Check condition of the plates, as these can crack from overtightening of the screws. If any are damaged, then they will need replacing (if available, some are obsolete now).
Thoroughly clean the inside of the swimming pool
Install the top profile AlkorMetal, using polyurethane adhesive, wall plugs and nails, or rivets.

Now the pool is ready, the chosen colour of liner can be installed. The liner is welded to the AlkorMetal profile at the top. In the corners of the pools and on tricky areas like steps it is held in place with contact adhesive. At the bottom, the liner is riveted to the floor, leaving a gap between the liner and the wall. Then the floor section is welded in on top.

Once all the sections have been welded together, the joins are finished with liquid pvc, this smooths the joins and leaves it looking neat.

The face plates and gaskets are reinstalled and the liner cut away from around them, the covers installed. The lights reinstalled.

The pool can be filled almost immediately and enjoyed for many years to come.

This pool was leaking and in need of renovation after being left empty for around 7 years.

The structure of the pool is in reasonable condition, but the liner is in poor condition from the pool being left empty. This type of prefabricated swimming pool is referred to as a steel pool, or a panel pool, as it is made up from steel wall sections that are bolted together to form the pool shell. The steps into the pool are a fibreglass unit.

The pool was leaking from leaking skimmer pipes, leaking return jet pipes and hoover socket. The only pipe not leaking was the drain! There was also poor seal around the steps. The pipes had pulled out of the jet fittings and under the skimmers, had significant chlorine damage.

We changed all the plumbing and took the opportunity to install LED lights whilst the terrace was open.

The liner chosen for this project is Renolit AlkorPlan 3000 Persia Black, with the treads of the steps in a matching stone effect non slip. Covering the prefabricated steps is important, as it eliminates the possibility of leaks where the steps seal to the liner, which are common.

The Renolit AlkorPlan 3000 series liner is twice as thick as the original bag liner and is reinforced with polyester fibres, guaranteeing that your pool stays leak free.

The Persia Black liner is one of our favourite pool finishes, combining a modern, personal choice for the pool, yet still being traditional with the tiled effect finish.

We can’t wait to see this swimming pool full. The water is a deep cool blue colour during the day. At night, the LED colour changing lamps will be a real focal point.

A typical installation in a prefabricated pool. The liners supplied in the kit are very thin and prone to splitting or cracking. This pool liner split, causing the pool to leak. Once the pool was emptied, the liner literally fell apart.

The Renolit AlkorPlan liner is reinforced with polyester fibres and is more than twice as thick as the original.

The liner is heat welded onsite, taking around a day and a half to install. We normally line the steps as well, as the joint between the liner and the steps is a known weak point.

We also installed LED pool lights, as the light buckets had to be changed.

This is the new liner from Renolit, designed to have an even longer life than the already excellent AlkorPlan 2000 and 3000 range.

The XTREME range is more suited to commercial applications, where the chemical dosing is higher because of the increased bathing load. In this case the colour is Fresh Blue, which gives the pool a bright, fresh, modern look. The steps have been covered in a non slip material for safety.

As with all Renolit AlkorPlan liners that we supply, this is a double layer, reinforced with polymer fibres, guaranteeing that your pool will not leak.

This pool in the village of La Alfoquia near Zurgena in Almeria is a typical swimming pool liner installation. The original liner as supplied with the kit was leaking through splits. The liners supplied with the kits are very thin “bag liners”, they have no reinforcing, nor lacquer treatment to protect against chemical and sun damage.

The installation of the liner here took 1.5 days and the swimming pool can be refilled immediately, there is no drying time and no mess to clean up after the work.

Swimming pool liners as supplied with prefabricated pools are very thin, so are prone to being damaged and getting wrinkled, there are a few reasons for this. The prefabricated swimming pool is built to a budget, so a thicker liner would add to the cost, but the most important reason is that steel pools are designed to be installed by a competent DIY team, so the complete liner is supplied in one complete unit and has to be light enough for a couple of people to move into place. The Renolit AlkorPlan liner is so thick that it would not be able to be packaged up, if it was a complete finished liner. In addition the DIY team would not have the equipment or training to be able to weld the membrane.

The Renolit AlkorPlan liner is supplied in rolls 1.65m wide and it takes 2 very strong people to lift.

The first step of the installation is to take apart the fittings, such as the jets, skimmers, lights, hoover socket and drain. Once these are taken apart, their condition can be assessed and if anything can not be reused it can be replaced. A common problem is that the screws were overtightened during the initial installation, then the plastic eventually breaks, meaning that the fittings can’t be reused and the pool could have leaked.

The finish chosen here is Persia Sand from the Renolit AlkorPlan 3000 range. It is fixed to the walls of the pool using a flat metal profiles and contact adhesive, the sections are then welded together. We generally use one sheet down each wall to leave less seams.

For the steps we used Renolit AlkorPlan Touch, which, with its sand stone finish, gives a good look and a safe non slip step.

The jets are reassembled along with the other fittings and the pool is ready to be refilled.

Another showcase of a complete swimming pool renovation. This swimming pool on the Algarve in Portugal had typical problems from a pool of around 20-25 years old. Tiles were constantly coming off and there was a horizontal crack running around the top of the pool, this was unsightly, but not leaking.

The 2 skimmer buckets had broken, due to the ground moving. To install the pool lining, we had to change these as part of the process. Fortunately there was no damage to the skimmer pipework. When we install the liner, we rarely need to excavate the terrace, in this case we installed the new skimmer buckets from inside the pool.

The second necessary repair was to install a new hoover pipe as the original line was blocked. The line got blocked because of hoovering up tiles from the bottom of the pool that had come off. In the case it was easier to install a complete new pipe, rather than excavating the terrace. The tiles were probably coming off because the wrong adhesive was used in the original build. Once the tiles start to come off in this way, there is little choice other than to drain the pool, strip all the tiles off and put all new mosaics. This is messy and takes a long time.

The owner of this pool chose to use the fantastic Renolit AlkorPlan liner, because of its easy care qualities and speed of installation. In this case the job was completed in just under 3 days. To have done all these pool repairs and then tile the pool would have taken considerably longer and would have been more costly. Not to mention weeks of construction mess.

Renolit AlkorPlan liner installation. Wood pools are prefabricated swimming pool kits that are a good choice for places where an above ground pool is the most sensible option. They are not normally used in the very hot and dry parts of Southern Spain, such as in Malaga, but further north, where the temperatures are a bit lower and the climate a bit more humid, they are more common.

The wooden walls are made from high quality, pressure treated timber, designed for use outdoors. The timbers are normally around 40mm thick to support the weight of the water inside the swimming pool.

As with most kit pools, the liner supplied is a very thin “bag” liner, which comes as a ready made liner from the factory. They are hard to install and they are prone to wrinkling. They also do not have the durability and strength of a reinforced liner and need changing. Steel Pool is a manufacturer of prefabricated swimming pool kits. Generally, the kit is comprised of steel panels for the walls, prefabricated fibreglass steps and a bag liner. They are also called panel pools.

The steel panels bolt together to form rigid walls and the floor is made of a sand cement mix.

It is a quick way to build a pool, but as with all kits, the liner is a very thin bag liner. The main reason for this is the liner has to be able to be packed into a box to go with the kit, it has to be able to be moved around by hand to be put into place. For this reason it is very thin to keep weight down so it can be put into place.

The AlkorPlan 3000 reinforced swimming pool liner is more than twice the thickness, so it would be impossible to put it into the kit. These types of lining are made onsite from rolls of material.

The swimming pool liner material is welded together using jets of very hot air to fuse the seams, ensuring a guaranteed water tight finish.

In most cases with prefabricated pools, we also line the steps to give an extra waterproof protection and it also looks good. In this pool the steps and seals were in very good condition, so they were left.

In this pool the thin bag or kit liner had simply disintegrated over time, so had to be changed. The thin liners have no lacquer protection or reinforcing, unlike the Renolit AlkorPlan 2000 and 3000 range, which are UV stable, reinforced and lacquered.
