Cracked swimming pool renovation & repair, Comares, Malaga. The village of Comares near Casabermeja and Rio Gordo, is nestled high in the hills above Malaga. The nature of the terrain, can make the building of swimming pols challenging.

Many pools are built on reclaimed land, where the hole for the pool has been excavated into the hillside and then half of the pool is built on the spoil dug out of the side of the hill. In this case, we believe that the swimming pool was built on the spoil dug out from the house.

The pool was very neglected and had been left empty for some time. The floor of the pool was cracked and generally the pool just needed to be refurbished to look its best.

We installed the highly versatile CARRARA, form the Renolit AlkorPlan 3000 range, with white non slip steps.

The installation took our highly skilled team 2 days.

This fantastic little pool is on the lower terrace of a village house in the town of Competa in Malaga.

The pool was built around 6 years ago from reinforced concrete and on a structure of columns. The pool had a constant leak from a bad joint between the walls and the floor. These were not properly bonded together during the construction, leading to a leak.

The leak was causing problems to the under build and more importantly was damaging the neighbours property, so something permanent and guaranteed had to be done.

For this installation, we used the Renolit AlkorPlan 3000 Ceramics Selene reinforced liner. The Ceramics range is textured to look like mosaic tiles, but with none of the disadvantages, such as tiles chipping or falling off.

An old swimming pool with several leaks. As you can see from the photos and video, the pool had several cracks running through the structure. There had been several repairs attempted, you can see in the photos that there are patches of different colour tiles. This is where the cracks were “repaired”. Repairing cracks in a pool structure is rarely successful, as the forces involved with the weight of the water are enormous. The crack repair has to be equally as strong as the rest of the structure, which is not always possible. If the repair is strong enough, the structure often cracks in the next weakest place. Repairing the crack does not solve the issue of underlying structural problems or the ground moving.

The last of which was trying to fill the cracks with silicone. Non of these repairs were successful and they look a mess. This pool was left with patches of different colour tiles, silicone lines and the water was impossible to keep clean.

We found other problems in this pool when we started works. The pool was originally painted. The floor in the deep end of the pool had been raised, but the new pipe connection was only sealed with waterproof cement. It was not glued together as it should have been. For a pool without further problems, we decided it was best to eliminate this pipe.

This swimming pool had had several failed attempts at making the structure waterproof. The structure of the pool is cracked and leaks, which is a common problem with swimming pools in areas like Gaucin, Malaga, where the ground is subject to movement and the swimming pools are mostly built on hillsides.

The last repair that the swimming pool had, was to spray it with a product called polyurea. Although this is a good product, it is expensive and needs to be painted afterwards. In the case of this swimming pool, the paint kept fading or peeling off, leaving the pool looking awful.

The reinforced pool membrane from Renolit’s AlkorPlan 2000 range is guaranteed to make the pool watertight and is designed and tested to cope with the pool chemicals. It is a smooth surface that needs little maintenance other than normal cleaning.

The installation of this swimming pool liner took our 3 man team around 15 hours to complete. Renovation of a swimming pool using our system is very quick with little mess and disruption.

Waterair pools are supplied from the factory with a very thin kit liner.

The WaterAir Pool system is a kit pool, comprising a concrete base (with no reinforcing). Then the walls are made from corrugated steel.

They were no specified because of budget, the very thin liner that is supplied with it does not have the durability of a reinforced pool membrane. The other compromise that has to be made, is that the pool liner from the kit has to be able to be moved by a couple of people to get it into place.

The reinforced membrane is so thick that the rolls of the AlkorPlan liner need at least 2 people to move them.

With this pool in Villanueva del Trabuco, we replaced the rotten kit liner with a reinforced membrane. This will give the pool many many years of trouble free service.

Normally we would cover the steps of the pool with the liner as well to avoid problems with leaks, however in this case, the pool has all its filtration and jacuzzi steps, which means that it is not possible.

In this pool, the client specified Renolit AlkorPlan 3000 in Blue Marble. In this case, we also changed the geotextile membrane on the floor.
