The picturesque village of Lanjaron is the setting for this rural retreat. Casa del Viento caters for tourists wanting to relax in the natural beauty of the Sierra Nevada, or enjoy a day on the beach in Almuñecar or Motril.

This swimming pool was originally a water deposit to supply water for farming on the land, but many years ago was turned into a swimming pool and is the centre piece of this rural hotel. After a long walk, or mountain biking, the guests deserve to jump in a refreshing swimming pool, or relax on the terrace at the side of it.

The swimming pool was leaking through cracks in the structure and through the leaking skimmer pipe.

Several poor attempts at repairs had been made in the past, but the new owners wanted a long lasting solution. Previously the pool has been painted with some sort of rubberised resin and textile. This did not stop the pool leaking as the cracks were just too big for it. Once the pool is leaking like this, extra chlorine has to be added to try and keep the water balanced, which is almost impossible as it is being constantly diluted. This extra chlorine puts extra strain on the plumbing, which in turn had destroyed the skimmer pipes.

Our first task was to break out the existing skimmers. This was for 2 reasons, to be able to change them for liner compatible units and make a new pipe for the skimmers back to the pump room, we did this by using the existing hoover pipe (this meant no excavation of the terrace reducing costs). If skimmers and pipe work are in good condition, we adapt them to be liner compatible, using a part specially made by Renolit.

The lights in the pool were not working properly. The cables were tested and found to be faulty. Solar powered lights have been installed, which means that the terrace does not have to be disturbed to pass new cables.

Once the liner compatible fittings are in place, we can start to install the Renolit AlkorPlan reinforced swimming pool membrane. This is installed using heat welding to fuse the sheets together. As the construction of this swimming pool is less than perfect (walls not straight, lots of old paint etc) it is important to choose a finish that will disguise as much of this as possible. Persia range of liners (Blue, Sand and Black) are designed with lines that are not straight, to camouflage imperfections. It is just not economically feasible to make the walls plumb straight and glass smooth.

How to renovate your painted swimming pool with Renolit AlkorPlan

The versatile Renolit AlkorPlan swimming pool liner is the fastest way of renovating a swimming pool. It is installed in just a few days, leaving the pool looking like new and guaranteed to be leak free.

How do you renovate your painted swimming pool using a reinforced swimming pool liner? This swimming pool in Alcala la Real, Jaen is a perfect example.

The pool had the typical problems relating to a painted pool. The paint was flaking, patchy and altogether just looked run down. There are other options than using an AlkorPlan membrane, but they are costly, messy and probably not guaranteed.

The first alternative is to tile the pool, but the pool will need to be sandblasted first to remove all the traces of paint, or the adhesive would not stick properly. This is very messy. Once the pool is sandblasted, it needs to be rendered with a waterproof cement, such as sikatop or masterseal. Then the pool can be tiled.

The second option is to fibreglass line the pool, but it pretty much leaves the swimming pool looking the same, just longer lasting.

The third and most sensible option is to install a reinforced pool membrane from Renolit. It can pretty much be applied directly over the existing paint. The fittings in the pool have to be changed for liner compatible ones. The liner installation takes around 2 days.

The renovation of painted swimming pools can be more involved than first meets the eye. If you want to tile a painted pool, to do the work properly is quite involved and messy. First the paint all needs to be sand blasted to remove it, as the tile adhesive won’t properly stick to the paint. This can cause other problems, as it may damage the render, so this will need rectifying before the tiling can be done. The biggest problem, that is often overlooked, is that the paint is actually part of the waterproofing of the structure. It seals the porous cement, to give a layer of waterproofing. This means that you must apply waterproof render. We have seen several previously painted pools leak after being tiled.

The Renolit AlkorPlan reinforced pool membrane gets around these problems because it is both the waterproofing and the cosmetic finish. No sand blasting, no mess and no leaks.

In most cases, the liner is installed directly over the painted finish. In some cases, some extra preparation will be needed to rectify areas where the paint is flaking or very uneven.

This swimming pool was cracked and leaking through the structure. Painted pools were often made like that because it is more economic than tiling, which is often reflected in the way that they were built- economically.

This traditionally built swimming pool was originally painted concrete, which was later covered with fibreglass.

The owner wanted to cosmetically renovate the pool, whilst ensuring that the pool remained waterproof GUARANTEED.

Tiling a fibreglass or painted pool can give problems if the contractor is not experienced. Normally an older concrete built swimming pool will have a fibreglass finish because it may have been leaking at some point. With older pools, especially those that were water deposits and painted, the paint in some cases actually seals the cement structure. In order to tile the pool properly the fiberglass and/or paint need to be sandblasted away, then the structure will need rendering smooth and then critically, it will need treating with a waterproofing agent, such as BASF MasterSeal, SikaTop etc, to ensure that the structure is waterproof (if the pool shows evidence of cracking, these solutions won’t work). This approach is costly and very messy, taking several days to complete.

The beauty of the RENOLIT system, is that we can install directly over the existing finish with very little preparation. This makes the job much faster, much less messy and also guarantees that the pool is waterproof, as the reinforced membrane is the cosmetic finsih and waterproofing, all in one. If there are cracks in the structure, the liner will also seal these.

Old swimming pools that were originally painted, like this one in La Linea, Cadiz, require maintenance every year or so. The pool has to be drained and repainted nearly every season. The repeated painting of the pool results in the surfaces starting to flake. In this case the swimming pool filter was blocked with paint flakes and the sand had to be changed.

This continuos maintenance to keep the pool looking nice is costly in terms of the amount of water used and costly because of the labour needed every time to repaint.

To renovate or reform a painted swimming pool, there are really only 2 options.

Pool Tiling

The first is tiling. In order to tile with glass mosaic tiles, the pool must be sandblasted in order to remove all the old paint. This creates a huge amount of mess and other problems.

Once the paint has been sand blasted, the render below can be damaged, requiring remedial work to repair. The other problem that is often overlooked (and often missed to cut costs), is that the paint was actually sealing the structure, it is imperative that the structure is treated with a waterproofing layer before tiling, or it will most likely leak.

Painted pools were often built cheaply in the first place or were originally water deposits (hence the choice of paint as the finish). When a pool was built in an economic way, probably not using reinforced concrete, it is impossible to tell how well it was built, so it is difficult to know if it will have structural problems in the future.

All of these processes are costly and messy, probably taking a couple of weeks start to finish.

Renolit AlkorPlan liners are specifically made for swimming pools, which is what sets them apart from other solutions.

Other solutions to structural pool leaks include polyester and polyurea. Polyester or fibreglass (FRP or GRP) is a composite of chopped fiber glass matt bound with a polyester resin and finished with gelcoat. This has limitations and we have had to line pools that have been fibre glassed. There are 3 main problems that manifest.

The fibreglass is not very flexible. It can not cope with cracks very well.
The fibreglass de-laminates from the substrate. If moisture gets behind, the fiber glass comes away from the surface below.
Degrading of the gelcoat. Due to the resin being hand mixed, it is impossible for each small batch of resin to be equal, so they fade at different rates leaving the pool looking patchy. You may find that the pool water ends up looking milky, this is because of the gelcoat breaking down. The gelcoat sets very rapidly, so in our hot climate a contractor may use less hardener to slow the setting time, however gelcoat will never full cure if the correct ratio of hardener to gelcoat is not used.
Application. The weather has to be perfect. No humidity or the resin will not stick properly, no wind as debris will stick to the gelcoat and not hot or it will set too fast to work with.

In addition, the finish of fibreglass is not particularly smooth, finish is like a painted pool.

Polyurea is a good solution, but needs maintenance. The top coat needs to be reapplied every couple of years. It is costly and also leaves the pool looking like a low budget painted pool.

This is a lovely little pool in a campo house in Coin. The pool is very old and has been painted several times. It was time for renovation.

In this case the pool was not leaking. We fitted a new jet pipe as the original was not suitable.

The refurbishment of a painted pool by traditional methods can be tricky, especially if a proper job is going to be done. In order to tile a pool like this, it would need to be sand blasted to remove all the existing paint, or the tiles won’t stick properly. This creates a couple of problems that the inexperienced may not realise. The most important is that in many old pools built to be painted, the paint actually seals the structure,providing the waterproofing. We have had to repair many pools where a builder has blasted and then tiled the pool, without considering the waterproofing, once the pools were finished, they leaked. Another problem is that the sand blasting can damage the render to a point where the pool has to be totally rendered again, before any more work can be done. The sand blasting is also messy.

Once the sand blasting is complete, it can often reveal problem areas such as cracks that have been covered over.

Removing the paint, sealing the structure with a waterproof render, tiling and grouting is a long and messy process, whereas the Renolit liner system can be finished in a couple of days.

In this pool we built new steps, as the others were very narrow. We lined the pool using Renolit AlkorPlan 3000 Marble blue, with Renolit Touch Sublime treads on the steps. The result of this quick swimming pool renovation is quite amazing.

The buildings at Los Lucas have been lovingly restored, adding to the charm of the place. The pools also needed reformation, as they had suffered cracking. This swimming pool had had several failed attempts at making the structure waterproof.
