Swimming Pool Refurbishment, Riviera del Sol, Malaga

This swimming pool in Mijas Costa, near to Calahonda was in need of a complete renovation. The pool had several problems. It leaked, was very deep, tiles were falling off, amongst other things.

The leaks in the pool were diagnosed as a leaking jet pipe, leaking skimmer pipe and a crack in the pool structure. All of these leaks needed to be solved in a way that would leave the pool with less potential problems in the future. Most of the leaks were caused by the ground moving, as the pool is built on a retaining wall and infill land.

To rectify the leaks in the pipes, new pipes were installed from the filter to the pool. A new circulation system is used that uses just one jet and one skimmer. The clever positioning of the jet ensures optimum water circulation. This also means that should there be any future problems with the plumbing, there is only one place to look.

The leak in the structure of the pool is solved by the installation of the Renolit AlkorPlan reinforced membrane. The swimming pool lining is also the cosmetic finish to the pool, solving the problem of the glass mosaic tiles falling off.

This colour is Persia Blue, with matching non slip from the Renolit AlkorPlan 3000 range.

The requirements of commercial pools require the best products. This pool was suffering from problems with tiles coming off and generally looking in very bad condition.

The tiles had been repaired several times and the pool regrouted, but this did not solve the problem. The community wanted a more permanent solution, as repairing the gresite again was not something that they wanted to do. They had looked at other solutions such as fibreglass, but fiberglass (polyester resin and chopped glass matt finished with gelcoat) did not give the type of finish or guarantee of durability required.

Renolit Xtreme from the AlkorPlan range was chosen for its superior quality and resistance to chlorine and staining. Renolit Xtreme is guaranteed for 15 years.

The first stage of the installation is to change the fittings for swimming pool liner compatible units. It is important to use the correct ones to avoid leaks. The lights have been changed for par 56 LED units, reducing running costs and maintenance, which is important for urbanizacion or community swimming pools that get heavy use.

After this, the walls were smoothed over with any missing tiles being replaced and a geotextile membrane was put on the floor. The Renolit xtreme membrane is then installed. The membrane is fused together using hot air welding.

Pool leak repair and renovation, Mijas, nr Fuengirola. The pool is located in the well established urbanisation of Cerros de Aguila, which is close to Mijas Golf, the Hipodromo, La Cala, Mijas and Fuengirola.

A typical pool, requiring both structural repair and cosmetic renovation. The pool suffered from leaks in the structure from a horizontal crack running along one side of the structure. We believe the cause of this pool leak to be from the way that the terrace was constructed. At the side of the pool there is a 4m high retaining wall, a space of around 1.5m and then the pool wall. The terrace has been tied to both the retaining wall and the pool wall, as the retaining wall has moved very very slightly (maybe only a few millimetres), it has pulled on the wall of the pool, causing the horizontal crack. Concrete is very strong, but has no flexibility, so with forces like this something has to give.

Without massive structural works, including demolition of the terrace and pool surround, it would be impossible to rectify this, as the forces acting on the retaining wall are far more powerful than any repair to the pool structure could cope with.

The solution to this type of cracked and leaking swimming pool problem, is to install the fantastic reinforced pool membrane from Renolit. Not only does this look fantastic, but also guarantees that the pool will be waterproof regardless of the problems in the structure.

The second problem with the pool was that the drain was leaking, because of ingress of roots from a nearby tree. To stop this it was blocked up with concrete. Normally with a liner pool a drain is not necessary, but in this case the client wanted the drain to be working, the simplest solution was to install a new one, with all new pipe rather than spending time looking for the source of the initial leak and unblocking the pipe.

The pool is finished in Persia Sand from the Renolit AlkorPlan 3000 range, which perfectly compliments the colour of the house. For the steps, we used a non slip, natural stone effect lining.

For improved running costs, an AstralPool par56 LED bulb was fitted.

This pool will be trouble free for many years to come.
