Total renovation of a very tired pool, Using Renolit AlkorPlan

This was a renovation for a very special client, my parents!

The pool was renovated by my father in the year 2000, after they bought the house. My father tiled the pool, installed the surround and did some work to the terrace, it looked very nice when first done. After 20 years, it was time for some renovation.

The pool was in a very bad condition, as it was leaking. The skimmer bucket had broken, the pool had cracked across its width and tiles were starting to come off. He was having problem keeping the pool clean, as it was leaking and was being constantly filled from a well.

Originally the pool was built in the 1960’s. It was built before the house, the original owner used the finca for weekends, growing vegetables and having family gatherings. The original part of the house was built in the 70’s. The next owner tiled the pool, extended the house, finally my parents bought it in the late 90’s and put their touch on things.

One of the things that we did here, that is a little unconventional was to change the position of the skimmers to the shallow end. There was only one skimmer and 2 jets, but the jets pumped in the opposite direction to the prevailing wind, rendering the skimmer useless, as the leaves never made it to the skimmer. By changing the skimmers to the opposite end, adding a second, we should be able to make the filtration much more effective.

There were a few loose coping stones, which we re-fixed.

The lights were removed, as the pool is no longer used at night.

The next big change was the choice of colour, here Persia Sand was chosen with TOUCH Sublime for the steps.

As you can see, the transformation of this swimming pool is pretty amazing. The renovation was well worthwhile, giving my parents a trouble free pool for many years to come.

A stunning transformation of a small swimming pool in Coin, Malaga. The pool had been abandoned many years. It was originally constructed as a water storage tank, then converted into a swimming pool. Due to ground movement and poor build in the first place, the pool structure had cracked, causing the pool to leak.

The leak in the pool was caused by a crack running all the way around the base of the pool. The clients wanted the pool to be renovated quickly and of course stop the pool from leaking.

The only guaranteed solution in this case was the installation of a Renolit AlkorPlan reinforced pool liner. This is Carribean Green from the AlkorPlan 2000 range.

The client prepared the pool, by building in steps, rendering walls and installing new plumbing. He then poured new concrete around the terrace. Once this work was completed, we could come in and install the liner, which took our team about 12 hours.

Self build swimming pools, using liner system

If you are planning to build your own swimming pool, it can be a very economical way of achieving a good looking pool, with the added guarantee that the structure is waterproof.

We are often asked to install the liner after the structure has been built, the swimming pool normally becomes more expensive this way, as work has been done that didn’t need to be, or we have to change things to suit.

We have put together a simple guide to show how the structure can be built ready for the installation, in order to save costs and speed up the pool construction process. The guide also includes the most cost effective way to install the plumbing and filtration system. This guide can be followed by the DIY home owner or a local builder.

The structure is built using concrete blocks, which are economical and quick to put together and once lined with a Renolit AlkorPlan reinforced liner, it is guaranteed to be waterproof.

We have seen many pools built from blocks and then tiled, but they nearly always leak, as hairline cracks allow the water to leak through the tiles. If a tiled pool is to be built, it needs to be built from reinforced concrete, as it is the concrete that is waterproof, not the tiles. The tiles are purely a cosmetic finish.

This large swimming pool is located between Coin, Alhaurin el Grande and Cartama. It had suffered from cracking and poor repairs.

We were asked to look at the pool by potential buyers of the house, as they were suspicious about the repairs that had been done. After a quick look at the pool, it was clear that poor repairs had been done to hide the fact that the pool had tipped and cracked. Moving the gravel away from the outside of the swimming pool clearly showed how badly the pool had cracked.

The old owner of the house had put a new surround on the pool and patched the top area and the cracks. If he hadn’t skimped on the bodged repairs and used the correct tiles, the new owners would not have known that the pool was leaking until it was too late.

The only guaranteed way to repair a cracked pool is to install a reinforced Renolit AlkorPlan liner. This provides the waterproofing. We prepared a quote for the work, which the new owners used to negotiate the price to buy the house with.

We always stress that the best time for planning pool works is in the off season when you are not using the pool, don’t leave it until it suddenly gets hot and you would like to use the pool! Advance planning avoids disappointment, although installations are very quick and fuss free, there is always the potential for delays, either with rain, sickness, breakdowns or other unforeseen problems, such as a total shutdown because of the Corona virus. We lost 6 weeks because of this, but the forward planning clients had swimming pools for summer, as the works were planned well in advance, in plenty of time for summer.

The other thing that gets overlooked is the working conditions, the later in the year you leave the work, the hotter it gets. We have seen temperatures as high as 50 degrees inside a pool with no water, which takes its toll on the workers.

This is a lovely little pool in a campo house in Coin. The pool is very old and has been painted several times. It was time for renovation.

In this case the pool was not leaking. We fitted a new jet pipe as the original was not suitable.

The refurbishment of a painted pool by traditional methods can be tricky, especially if a proper job is going to be done. In order to tile a pool like this, it would need to be sand blasted to remove all the existing paint, or the tiles won’t stick properly. This creates a couple of problems that the inexperienced may not realise. The most important is that in many old pools built to be painted, the paint actually seals the structure,providing the waterproofing. We have had to repair many pools where a builder has blasted and then tiled the pool, without considering the waterproofing, once the pools were finished, they leaked. Another problem is that the sand blasting can damage the render to a point where the pool has to be totally rendered again, before any more work can be done. The sand blasting is also messy.

Once the sand blasting is complete, it can often reveal problem areas such as cracks that have been covered over.

Removing the paint, sealing the structure with a waterproof render, tiling and grouting is a long and messy process, whereas the Renolit liner system can be finished in a couple of days.

In this pool we built new steps, as the others were very narrow. We lined the pool using Renolit AlkorPlan 3000 Marble blue, with Renolit Touch Sublime treads on the steps. The result of this quick swimming pool renovation is quite amazing.

This is one of the worst pools that we have seen for the number of cracks in the pool structure. The pool was first built 40 years ago and has a long history of bodged repairs, one on top of the other.

The underlying cause of the pool leak was a poorly built structure. The pool was built next to a retaining wall on unstable ground. Added to this, the pool was built from blocks and not from reinforced concrete.

The pool had cracked everywhere. In the photos you can see that someone attempted to seal the cracks with silicone. On inspection, we found the problems to be much deeper. Once we knocked some of the tiles off, we found that the cracks in the swimming pool were full of roots!

A misconception that we hear often is that “the pool can’t be leaking, it’s just been grouted”. Pool grout is not waterproof.

Some of the previous pool repairs here were, painting it to stop the leak. Covering the areas of the cracks with mesh and painting again. Pouring a concrete slab inside the pool to try and hold it together. Rendering with waterproof cement. Finally tiling the pool. non of these repairs stopped the pool leaking and clearly have cost the client a small fortune over the years.

With the installation of the Renolit AlkorPlan 3000 Persia Blue reinforced pool membrane, leaks are a distant memory. The installation of the liner took approx 23 hours, including the modification and replacement of the accessories in the pool, such as the skimmer and jets. The decision was taken to eliminate the drain, as there was no practical way of installing a new pipe from pool to pump room. A new pipe would have been necessary, as the original is iron, which is not compatible with PVC fittings and can also cause brown marks in the pool (regardless whether it is a liner or tiled).

If a pool structure has cracked, the only guaranteed solution is the installation of a liner. There are other methods that can be used, such as staples or epoxy injection. These methods have many drawbacks. In order to staple the pool wall, it needs the tiles breaking away and once these are replaced, a repair will be visible. The repair is only as strong as the surrounding material. In the case of this pool, it would not have worked. Epoxy injection is sometimes effective, but only on well made reinforced concrete, with a block structure it would be useless as there is nothing for the epoxy to bind to. With both epoxy and staples, if the structure is moving slightly, all that will happen is that the structure fails at the next weakest point and the whole repair process has to be started again.

Tolox is a small village near to Alozaina, Coin, Guaro and Monda. It is situated on the road from Coin to Ronda.

This pool had suffered structural cracking due to the poor construction initially and the ground moving. Part of the pool and had been built on an excavated area and part built on spoil.

The pool cracked both sides “breaking its back”. This caused huge water leaks. The previous owners of the house had attempted to repair the cracks, but this was not successful, as you can see from the photos, it also looked awful.

One of the other problems caused by the ground moving was that it broke the pipes from one of the skimmers and the hoover socket. In order to leave the pool as trouble free as possible, we have removed these. They were not really needed and were 2 points that the pool could leak from, as the ground at that side of the pool is moving.

Another pipe we had to repair was the pipe for the main drain. The pipe was not leaking but had been chlorine damaged. This is not common in drain pipes of swimming pools, but in this case it was because the pool had to be over-chlorinated as it was leaking and then the pool could only circulate the water using the drain, as one of the skimmer pipes was leaking. The chlorine damage had caused the pipe to become very brittle.

The pool has been lined and waterproofed using Renolit AlkorPlan 3000 Persia Blue. This will guarantee that the structure is leak free.

This pool also benefits from the installation of a salt chlorination system, to give softer, sparkling water and lower maintenance. The salt water is kinder on the skin in comparison to regular chlorine.

A typical case of a poorly built pool on poorly prepared ground, causing the pool to leak through vertical cracks in the structure.

Local pool companies had diagnosed the leaks from the cracks in the structure, but their solution was to build a new pool inside the existing structure. The clients wanted another approach with guaranteed results, so they contacted us.

Building a new pool inside an existing structure is a perfectly acceptable method, but has several disadvantages in comparison to the installation of a liner.

Cost. Construction of a new pool inside the other is approximately 3 times the cost of a reinforced swimming pool membrane.
Time. We can install in approximately 2 days for a pool this size, compared to around 3 weeks for construction.
Mess. In 2 days, we can’t really make that much mess. The only noisy or messy part is when we change the fittings to be liner compatible. This normally takes about 4 hours.
Pool size. A new pool will be between 400-450mm smaller in both length and width and 200mm shallower than the original, due to the amount of concrete needed.

Other advantages of the swimming pool liner are that it is easier to care for than traditional pool surfaces. It is nicer to walk on, with no sharp edges compared to glass mosaic tiles.

The reinforced Renolit pool liner is reinforced with polyester fibres, remaining permanently flexible. Technical specifications state that it will tolerate 3% stretch per metre.
