Cracked, leaking swimming pool repair and renovation, Tavira, Portugal

This is a typical project for us. Cracked swimming pools are a real problem for the homeowner. There are really very few ways to repair the pool successfully and guarantee that the pool will not leak.

What options are there for repairing a leaking cracked swimming pool structure?

1. The pool can be fibreglassed. Glass fiber matting and polyester resin is applied to the structure, then finished with gelcoat. This provides a waterproof, semiflexible finish. However there are some drawbacks. If cracks open up, the fibreglass can’t cope with this movement. The finish looks brush applied, like a painted pool. The fibre glass often delaminates from the tiles, unless the structure is rendered with tile adhesive to give a good key.
2. Build a new pool inside the old one. A good, but very expensive solution. The old pool structure is treated just as the hole in which the new pool will be built. All plumbing needs to be new and a new surround made. Again there are some drawbacks. Cost is a big factor. Time, this takes 3 weeks start to finish. Mess, building a new pool is messy. Size of the pool, to be successful, 20cm of concrete needs to be sprayed or poured over the surface, this reduces the size of the pool by early 50cm in length and width (have to allow for the render and tiles layer), also the depth of the swimming pool is reduced by 20cm, not always a problem, but if the pool is very shallow, it is. The much wider pool surround can look a bit awkward.
3. Staple cracks. The forces involved in a swimming pool structure are massive. We have yet to see a system of staples that will hold together a cracked swimming pool structure. We often go to install in pools that have had multiple crack repairs.

The reinforced PVC membrane remains permanently flexible and will not rip or tear. The installation takes a couple of days for a standard domestic pool, with virtually no mess.
